Hendrik Tevreden: MEP celebrates 55th anniversary A legacy of struggle, dignity, and freedom for Aruba

Hendrik Tevreden

Aruba commemorates an important date in its political history: the 55th anniversary of the Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo (MEP). A party born from the people, with the people, and for the people, which for more than five decades has played a fundamental role in shaping our national identity and political freedom.

This anniversary is more than a symbolic date. It is a moment to reflect on a profound history of struggle, sacrifice, and vision. MEP was founded by our liberator, Betico Croes (may he rest in peace), with a clear and non-negotiable goal: to free Aruba and achieve Status Aparte. A dream that, thanks to perseverance and determination, became a reality.

During its 55 years of existence, MEP has not limited itself to electoral politics. The party has functioned as a true social movement, with human dignity, social justice, and love for the homeland as its main pillars. MEP has been the voice of many Arubans who were not always heard, and MEP has never been afraid to stand firm and defend the interests of our island.

Freedom, as has always been stated, has no price.

For me personally, it is a great honor and pride to be part of this movement and to continue the path that many great leaders walked before me. With MEP, Aruba has seen stability, significant economic development, and the consolidation of our Status Aparte as the foundation of our future.

The challenge for our current MEP generation is great. The freedom and Status Aparte that our ancestors fought to achieve are now in danger. There are political forces that see our autonomy as something negotiable. This is something that, under no circumstances, can be accepted by our people. The task of MEP today is to preserve the “diamond jewel” that is our freedom.

I want to express special gratitude to the family of the late Mr. Betico Croes, as founder and visionary of MEP; to Mr. Nelson Orlando Oduber, as honorary leader and firm guide for 25 years; and to our current leader, Mrs. Evelyn Wever-Croes, who today carries the responsibility of leading a party with a great history that has overcome major challenges in a changing world.

Also, a word of thanks to all former candidates, neighborhood leaders, board members, commissions, and the party’s activists. To every voter and supporter of MEP: your trust and perseverance are the heart of the party, in good times and in difficult times.

Congratulations Aruba. Congratulations Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo on its 55th anniversary. May God continue to bless our country and guide us with wisdom, strength, and love.
