“Much talk, no action”: Workers tired of empty promises and cancellation of new building

The infrastructure crisis within the Driver’s License and Justice departments has taken a more serious turn. Workers have expressed deep frustration with what they call a “long history of empty promises,” where projects for new buildings are presented and then silently canceled, leaving staff in precarious conditions.

The “Musical Chairs” Between Ministers

Staff members recounted how hope for a better workplace has been passed from one hand to another without any concrete results. The original project for a new building (Codemsa) began under former Minister Andin Bikker, passed to former Minister Tjon, and is now under the responsibility of Minister Tocco.

However, the latest news received by the workers is disastrous: the Codemsa building project has been canceled. According to information received, the government considers the project “too expensive” to realize or take over. After years of planning to give the Police Force and justice departments a dignified home, the workers feel they have been left with nothing.

A Danger to Aruba’s Security

The complaint is not just about comfort, but about the capacity to protect the island. Workers emphasize a key point: if Aruba is to remain one of the safest islands in the region, those in charge of that security must be taken care of.

“If you want security, you must take the security workers to heart. Something we do not feel is happening currently,” the President of the SPA union declared.

“Tired of Photos and Pretty Words”

The general sentiment within the department is one of total disillusionment. Workers point out that they are tired of seeing ministers visit the site, speak beautifully, and take photos for publication, while in reality, they have been waiting over a year for an answer from the current official without seeing any finalized project.

The Breaking Point:

  • Unhealthy: The presence of mold and lack of hygiene is affecting colleagues’ health.
  • Physical Deterioration: Air conditioning units that do not work and ceilings that are coming down.
  • Lack of Respect: Staff are asking to be taken seriously, as they have reached their limit.

They no longer want “much talk”; they want action. The situation has become a matter of national urgency, highlighting the lack of an adequate building for public service and a healthy environment for police officers to work in
