The Wela Project, an inspiring initiative celebrating grandmothers in the Caribbean, was officially launched last Friday at the 22nd Annual Female Leadership Conference in Curaçao.

This pioneering effort seeks to build a contemporary community that honors, connects, and uplifts grandmothers while preserving their invaluable wisdom, love, and cultural heritage.

Derived from the Papiamentu word for grandmother, “Wela” symbolizes the deep-rooted influence of grandmothers as family anchors, caregivers, spiritual guides, storytellers, and second mothers. Their role in shaping generations and passing down traditions is vital, and this project aims to strengthen intergenerational bonds.

A Vision for Connection and Support
Project initiator Reyna Joe shared that the Wela concept had been in development for quite some time, with a strong vision of leveraging digital technology to create a virtual network of support among grandmothers. This digital connection is designed to benefit grandmothers, their families, and, most importantly, their grandchildren.

The official launch was marked by a symbolic signing of a tea towel by the grandmothers in attendance, signifying their participation and commitment to the project.

Preserving Stories and Cultural Legacy
One of the first initiatives under the Wela Project is the collection of grandmother tales, an effort to preserve oral traditions for educational purposes. These stories will serve as a source of inspiration, knowledge, and support for future generations.

Looking Ahead
As the project continues to grow, further details and updates will be shared through social media, ensuring broader participation and engagement across the Caribbean.
The Wela Project is more than a tribute, it is a movement to safeguard family ties and cultural heritage for generations to come.
