The Government of Aruba celebrated the official opening of the Directorate of Kingdom Relations and European Union, a significant step in strengthening relations within the Dutch Kingdom and with the European Union. This historic moment brought together local and international leaders, including the Prime Minister of Aruba, Mike Eman, the Minister of Kingdom Relations and European Affairs, Gerlien Croes, the European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Síkela, and the State Secretary for Kingdom Relations, Eddie van der Burg.
In his speech, Prime Minister Mike Eman emphasized that the opening of this directorate is a clear signal that the Kingdom and the European Union are becoming a strategic priority for Aruba. He indicated that the new office will actively contribute to informing the community, developing policy, and creating new opportunities for the well-being of the people. According to the Prime Minister, international cooperation is not based solely on financial resources, but on the conviction that we are stronger together than apart.
Minister Gerlien Croes expressed appreciation for the broad collaboration that made this initiative possible. She highlighted that the re-establishment of an office dedicated to Kingdom Relations and the European Union demonstrates vision and perseverance. She underscored that Aruba must position itself as an active and strategic partner within the context of the Kingdom and Europe, focusing on sustainable development, innovation, and economic opportunity.
European Commissioner Jozef Síkela confirmed the European Union’s commitment to overseas countries and territories (OCTs), including Aruba. He emphasized that although Aruba is part of the European family, for many people, the European Union still seems far away. The new directorate will serve as a direct point of contact for citizens, companies, researchers, and institutions, facilitating access to European programs such as Erasmus+, Horizon Europe, Connecting Europe Facility, Digital Europe, and the European Solidarity Corps.
According to Commissioner Síkela, these opportunities, especially for young people, must be utilized to their full potential. He also announced that work is underway to expand—and even double—the budget available for OCTs in the next European Union budget, which will result in more resources, better access, and a stronger partnership.
During his intervention, State Secretary Eddie van der Burg stressed that this week’s meetings are not just about financing, but about strengthening connections. He indicated that in a complex geopolitical world, cooperation is essential, especially in areas such as connectivity, energy, and food security. He emphasized that the primary value lies in connecting people, countries, and institutions, thereby strengthening the ties between Aruba, the Netherlands, and the European Union.
The Government of Aruba considers the opening of the Directorate of Kingdom Relations and European Union as a major achievement and an investment in the country’s future. The initiative confirms the ongoing commitment to expanding international opportunities, strengthening Aruba’s strategic position, and creating a solid foundation for sustainable prosperity for all citizens.
