In recognition of World Diabetes Day, the Public Health Department (DVG) is launching a new campaign titled “Eat Well, Pay Less”, a national initiative aimed at encouraging healthier and more accessible nutrition choices for everyone.
A concerning situation
According to the latest data from DVG, 46% of adults in Aruba are obese. Including those who are overweight, nearly 8 out of 10 Arubans fall into the overweight or obesity category.
The picture among children is even more alarming: 42.7% of children between 5 and 12 years old are overweight or obese.
These numbers reflect the reality many families face daily. Obesity increases the risk of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and certain types of cancer. This not only affects individual health but also places a significant financial burden on Aruba’s healthcare system, where more than half of all expenditures are linked to chronic illnesses.
Goal of the campaign
The “Eat Well, Pay Less” campaign aims to show that healthy eating does not have to be expensive. It seeks to empower Aruban families with practical guidance and sustainable alternatives to improve the well-being of the community.
Over the next twelve months, the campaign will emphasize the dangers of sugary drinks and ultra-processed foods, and will present healthier, tasty and affordable alternatives.
Initial theme: “Change Your Sip”
The first theme of the campaign is “Change Your Sip.” From November through January, DVG will focus on the consumption of sugary drinks.
The message: think twice before you drink. During this phase, the campaign will provide information about the relationship between sugary drinks and diabetes, while also presenting healthier and more affordable options for families.
The Public Health Department calls on government sectors, businesses, schools and the community to join forces in creating an environment that supports healthy choices.
“To achieve real change, we must work together. Health should not be a luxury, but an opportunity for every Aruban.”
DVG invites everyone to participate in the campaign, follow the practical advice and make small daily changes.
“Let’s create change sip by sip, adjust our habits and protect our health.”
