Today, Bonaire has taken an important step toward strong and resilient development for the island. The Public Entity Bonaire and the Government of the Netherlands have officially signed the Bonaire Regional Deal. Through this collaboration, €13 million will be invested in projects that improve the island’s liveability, accessibility and self-sufficiency.
The Bonaire Regional Deal focuses on two main pillars:
* Connectivity & Accessibility: the development of a Multifunctional Center, improved water management, safer school environments and the phased introduction of public transportation.
* Self-Sufficiency: the realization of a container depot and the installation of solar panels on primary schools to reduce costs and promote sustainability.
Working Together for a Sustainable Bonaire
Bonaire is growing and changing rapidly. This creates many opportunities, but also brings significant challenges. Through the Regional Deal, projects are being implemented that contribute to a safe, sustainable and socially connected Bonaire. Access to schools and school playgrounds will become safer and more inviting, solar panels will be installed at schools, public transportation will be introduced step-by-step, and improvements will be made to water management — which will also benefit agriculture.
Additionally, a Multifunctional Center will be developed: a central location for economic development, culture, talent development, education, events and community gatherings. A container depot will also be built near the harbor to make the transport of goods safer and more efficient. Primary schools will be equipped with solar panels so that energy costs decrease, and the savings can be reinvested to strengthen the quality of education.
Lieutenant Governor John Soliano emphasizes how proud Bonaire can be of this collaboration and the opportunities it creates. He states that the Regional Deal enables the execution of projects that promote both physical and social connectivity and accessibility on the island, while increasing Bonaire’s self-sufficiency. “We are very proud,” Soliano says.
Collaboration for a Future-Resilient Bonaire
The projects are being carried out by the Public Entity Bonaire, in close cooperation with the Government of the Netherlands and local partners and stakeholders. This joint effort brings together knowledge, resources and expertise to build a sustainable, safe and future-oriented Bonaire.
