Muzaninne Wever, on behalf of the FUTURO faction, received the manifesto presented by former minister Otmar Oduber and confirmed that her faction will thoroughly review and analyze the contents of the document. Wever emphasized that in a constitutional state, it is fundamental to have fair justice for everyone, protecting citizens and officials against bad-faith prosecution.
No person may be above the law, but at the same time, no one in Aruba should be unjustly prosecuted because of a law or for personal and political reasons.
In a small society like Aruba, where everyone knows each other, it can become very easy for the system to ruin or destroy a person’s life. Criminal prosecution cannot be driven by motives of revenge, personal antipathy, or the political position a person holds.
The FUTURO faction will carry out the necessary follow-up with the Government to ascertain the true status of the law that has not yet been approved or implemented, understand the obstacles, and find out why it has not yet come into force.
Member of Parliament Muzaninne Wever pointed out that taking on a political position puts a person in a very vulnerable situation against opponents who may seek to trap or eliminate them simply because they represent a threat to their position or power. This “must never, under any circumstances, have a place in our system in Aruba.”
The topic of parliamentary immunity in public meetings was also addressed, criticizing how some politicians use this immunity to discredit, insult, and deceive about an individual instead of debating the matter itself. This, like abuses in the criminal realm, is unacceptable.
Wever concluded by emphasizing that the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Attorney General, and the laws debated in Parliament must guarantee fair treatment for everyone without exception.
