Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are working together to further develop and strengthen papiamentu (Bonaire/Curaçao) and papiamento (Aruba). Through a cooperation agreement, the three islands are working toward greater visibility, appreciation, and vitality of the language.
The governing officials of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao signed the cooperation agreement in July 2025. From the moment of signing, Bonaire held the presidency of this cooperation for one year.
Since October 2025, a working group consisting of representatives from the three islands has been working on a work program featuring various projects to further strengthen the use and promotion of papiamentu and papiamento.
One of the projects that will receive emphasis in the coming period is Literary Translation. The three islands are working together on a program that aims to make more high-quality books available in their native language. In relation to this, objectives, focus, and possibilities for further expanding the number of currently available titles are being analyzed.
More books mean more opportunities for our language. A wide selection of books for children, youth, and adults stimulates the joy of reading, strengthens linguistic skills, and ensures that new generations continue to appreciate the language. Furthermore, these books contribute to passing on cultural stories, traditions, and local identity. They support multilingual education and language development. They also offer opportunities for writers, translators, and other creative professionals.
Starting in July 2026, the presidency of the collaboration passes to Aruba. For one year, Aruba will continue the coordination of the joint activities of the ABC collaboration.
The transfer of the presidency underlines the joint commitment of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao to papiamentu and papiamento. By pooling knowledge, experience, and initiatives within the ABC region, we are building a sustainable future for our language together.
