You may have known him washing cars, working in the fields, selling fresh produce, or here and there working on houses with his friends. Not only has a Captain retired, but one whose legends reached every corner of the world. Affectionately known as “Chip,” disciplined in sailing boats of all types and sizes. A nomad with a pure and joyful heart, yet always deserving of respect. Always ready to lend a hand—provided the job didn’t become too big.
He loved making his chains, singing during karaoke nights, with favorites including Jimmy Buffett, Guitarman, and the classics of Santana. Always ready for a game of backgammon or to cast a fishing line into the water, where work would simply fade away. As a child, he sold coconuts to earn his bread. He climbed to the top without a harness, removed coconuts with his feet, grabbed the rope, held on, slid down, did a somersault, grabbed his machete, and began opening coconuts.
You might think this is exaggerated, but I assure you, everything you’ve just read is true. A fearless man with a heart of gold, a lover of all things pure. Blessed are those who had the opportunity in life to know “Chip”a friend, a support, a warm presence, a brotherhood. Always ready to bring a smile to anyone he met along the way. If he didn’t like you, that was your problem or you knew exactly why.
Tourists loved him, admired him, and wished they could live as freely as he did. Aruba needs more true islanders like “Chip,” those who eat sushi while wanting to see their island even more beautiful, unafraid to create details that bring pleasure to the horizon and atmosphere. A true Aruban, with nature in his chest and heart.
Captain of his own ship, unafraid of his destination.
This Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., the final farewell ceremony will take place at Olive Tree, Piedra Plat. With his natural black hair, untouched by dye, at the age of 62. Aruba says farewell and a heartfelt thank you to its last Pirate.
Condolences to all his loved ones and friends.
