The official start of the two-year police training for 11 new aspiring officers of the Dutch Caribbean
Police Force (KPCN) and 7 aspiring officers of the Sint Maarten Police Force (KPSM), took place on
Monday, the 27 th of January 2025 on Sint Maarten. During a ceremony at the Police Station in
Philipsburg, speeches were given by the Minister of Justice of Sint Maarten, Mr. Nathalie Tackling,
the Caribbean Coordinator of the Police Academy, Mr. Jan-Willem Ruts, the Chief of Police of the
KPCN, Mr. Alwyn Braaf and the Chief of Police of the KPSM, Mr. Carl John.
The speakers emphasized the importance of the profession the aspiring officers chose for and
reminded they that the police profession is rooted in service to the community. Integrity was
emphasized as a fundamental value they must maintain in their future role. Aspiring officers were
encouraged to remain steadfast in their commitment to protect and serve with honor and
dedication.
Also present at the ceremony were the KPSM management team, chief of the operation department
at KPCN, Mr. Clark Mercera, the education coordinator of the KPCN, Mr. Rouel Pinedo and the
teachers and mentors who will guide and support the students during their education on St.
Maarten.
Over the next two years, the new aspiring officers, under the responsibility of the Police Academy,
will undergo intensive training in which they will become acquainted with the various aspects of
police work, such as conducting surveillance, investigating crimes and providing emergency
assistance. The 11 new aspiring officers for the Dutch Caribbean will follow the theoretical part of
the police training in St. Maarten and the practical experience on Bonaire. Upon completion of the
training, these aspiring officers will be in possession of a police diploma on MBO-4 level, whereafter
they will be fully deployable on Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba.
