During the review of the 2026 budget for various entities, AVP Member of Parliament and faction leader Mrs. Jennifer Arends-Reyes raised a serious concern: the ongoing shortage of qualified personnel in the public sector, particularly within the institutions known as the High Councils of State – the General Audit Chamber, the Advisory Council, and Parliament itself.
According to Mrs. Arends-Reyes, many of the vacancies in these crucial institutions remain open for long periods. These are positions that require a high level of expertise, experience, and professionalism—qualities that are not only important but absolutely essential to ensure a strong and transparent democratic state.
“We are talking about bodies that play a crucial role in the functioning of a healthy democracy, financial transparency, and good governance. Without sufficient and well-prepared staff, the independence and efficiency of their work are compromised,” the MP stated.
In light of this concern, Mrs. Arends-Reyes urges the government to give immediate priority to a workforce strengthening plan for the public sector. The main points include:
– Attracting and retaining local and regional talent;
– Investing in the training and education of public employees;
– Modernizing the recruitment process to more effectively reach the professionals Aruba needs for the optimal functioning of its democracy.
Mrs. Arends-Reyes emphasizes that the issue is not merely a financial or budgetary challenge but one that directly affects the foundations of the democratic system.
“We cannot allow the most important institutions for oversight and advice to remain understaffed. This is not only a budget matter but a matter of safeguarding our democracy and the country’s well-being,” Arends-Reyes concluded.
The faction leader also reaffirmed that throughout all upcoming budget discussions, she will continue to highlight this crucial topic to stimulate concrete action.
