Member of Parliament Shailiny Tromp-Lee: “There is no democracy in the Parliament of Aruba; decisions are being made behind closed doors”

Member of Parliament Shailiny Tromp-Lee, chair of the Finance Committee of the Parliament of Aruba, has expressed deep concern about what she describes as a lack of democracy within Parliament. According to the parliamentarian, important decisions affecting the future of Aruba are being made without the proper democratic process.

Tromp-Lee lamented the current situation and indicated that Aruba is going through a critical moment, where the country’s autonomy is at risk. According to the MP, this situation is developing with the awareness of both the Netherlands and the leadership of the Government of Aruba.

One of the main concerns raised by Tromp-Lee is that the President of Parliament has not convened a formal meeting to address the issue of the proposed Rijkswet HOFA, a topic that carries significant implications for Aruba’s financial position and its autonomy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

“Parliament must discuss this matter openly and transparently,” Tromp-Lee stated. She argued that the absence of an official meeting to address the issue contributes to a situation in which Parliament cannot exercise its role of oversight and supervision, as required within a democratic system.

In addition, Tromp-Lee criticized the governing style of the current coalition of Arubaanse Volkspartij (AVP) and Futuro. According to the MP, the way decisions are currently being handled weakens the democratic process. She stated that the current practices are perceived as a form of governance that limits participation and debate within Parliament.

The parliamentarian emphasized that the protection of Aruba’s autonomy and respect for democratic procedures must remain a priority for all political actors in the country.

This statement was issued by Shailiny Tromp-Lee in her role as Chair of the Finance Committee of the Parliament of Aruba.
