Minister of public health sees the Aruba patient center as a positive “check and balance”

Minister Wyatt Ras Den Sala

Within the framework of the launch of the Aruba Patient Center (Centro Pashent di Aruba), the Minister of Public Health, Mervin Wyatt-Ras, elaborated on the government’s ongoing efforts to restructure the healthcare system, reduce wait times, and strengthen channels where citizens can address their concerns and complaints.

Concrete actions to improve the healthcare system

The Minister highlighted several key steps taken to elevate the quality and accessibility of healthcare services in Aruba:

General Practitioner to Specialist Referral Protocol: Formal protocols were signed between the general practitioners’ organization (HAVA) and specialists to ensure that the referral process becomes more efficient, directly tackling long waiting lists.

Strengthening of IVA and Protection for Senior Citizens: Additional financial resources were allocated to the Public Health Inspection of Aruba (IVA) to expand its staff. Within this effort, a department dedicated to handling complaints and protecting the rights of senior citizens was created.

Complaint Channels and Transparency: When an individual encounters an issue at the hospital or in care services, they can be guided to the IVA or handle the matter through the Ombudsman of Aruba.

A positive “check and balance” force

Comparing the role of the new platform to the dynamics between the Government and Parliament, the Minister explained that an independent patient organization is essential for keeping healthcare providers and state entities sharp and vigilant.

“It is just like government: we are the government, but you have parliament continuously questioning you and asking questions. That keeps you sharp and forces you to improve. Such a unified body of patients will do the exact same work, highlighting where things are not going well so that we can do better.”

The Minister concluded that while direct dialogue and existing institutions are the first step, the existence of the Aruba Patient Center will serve as key support to conduct the necessary follow-up, ensuring that all entities fulfill their duties and that patients receive the best possible care.
