Aruba and Curaçao have taken an important step toward strengthening regional cooperation with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on tourism development, connectivity, tourism security, and sustainable economic growth.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Tourism, Transport, and Labor of Aruba, mr. Wendrick Cicilia, and the Minister of Economic Development of Curaçao, Roderick Middelhof, establishing a framework for closer collaboration between the two islands over the next three years.

The MOU aims to promote the exchange of knowledge, expertise, best practices, and information in key areas such as tourism development, destination management, air and maritime connectivity, tourism security, sustainability, research, and human capital development.

A central component of the agreement is the shared ambition to explore opportunities for a Dutch Caribbean Multi-Destination Tourism Initiative, positioning Aruba and Curaçao as complementary destinations while preserving each island’s unique identity, culture, and tourism brand.

Through this collaboration, both countries will explore opportunities to strengthen airlift, enhance inter-island mobility, support joint tourism promotion efforts in selected international markets, and encourage visitors to experience different destinations within the Dutch Caribbean.

The agreement also provides a platform for cooperation between the Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA), the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB), airports, airlines, cruise operators, hotel associations, and other tourism stakeholders. Potential initiatives include joint marketing campaigns, combined travel experiences, destination branding efforts, and programs that encourage longer visitor stays and increased tourism spending.

Minister Wendrick Cicilia emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in an increasingly competitive global tourism landscape.

“Aruba and Curaçao share deep historical, cultural, and economic bonds. Through this agreement, we are creating new opportunities to strengthen our tourism sectors, improve connectivity between our islands, and explore innovative ways to enhance the visitor experience. By working together where it makes sense, while maintaining our individual identities, we can build great competitiveness and economic opportunities for our people.”

In addition to tourism promotion and connectivity, the MOU places a strong emphasis on sustainable tourism development, tourism security, environmental conservation, climate resilience, cultural preservation, and the diversification of tourism products.

The agreement also encourages cooperation in tourism research and data exchange, professional development, training opportunities, and institutional capacity building to support the long-term growth and resilience of the tourism industry in both countries.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reflects the shared commitment of Aruba and Curaçao to strengthen regional cooperation, foster sustainable tourism growth, and create new opportunities that benefit locals, businesses, and visitors alike.

The agreement entered into force upon signing and is destined to guide cooperation between both countries for an initial period of three years.
