Recently, the Mabon Neighborhood Development and Wellbeing Commission organized a special activity for seniors titled “Un Atardi Ameno cu nos 60 Plussers” (A Pleasant Afternoon with our 60-Plus), which took place at E Pleinchi di Mabon.
During the afternoon, participants enjoyed a warm and pleasant atmosphere filled with music of yesteryear, creating an environment of nostalgia and joy. The event began with a presentation by the Commission, led by President Astrid Vries, along with adult members Gloria Buddy, Danilla Rincones, and Nancy Calixta, and youth members Isaac Koolman, Georgy Calixta, and Marcus Koolman, who all contribute actively to community organizing.
As part of the opening, a moment of recognition was held to honor the memory of Sam Polonia, a neighborhood resident who recently passed away, followed by a prayer for the community’s wellbeing.
The program included cultural and educational contributions, including a poem presented by John Freddy Montoya from the Department of Culture, which resonated deeply with the audience. Additionally, representatives from the National Platform Heritage of Slavery in Aruba (PNHSA)—Ms. Sirelda Jackson, Shirley Caines, and Marlien Dokman—shared valuable information regarding historical heritage.
Cultural performances were a highlight of the afternoon, featuring a traditional dance presentation organized by the group Expression Folklorico Viva Venezuela.
The gathering was attended by Minister Mervin Wyatt-Ras, who emphasized the importance of sharing history and the value of seniors’ experiences as a source of wisdom for new generations. She highlighted that by maintaining and sharing traditions, the community continues to strengthen its identity and unity. Minister Rene Herdé also showed his support for the initiative, noting the vital role seniors play in community development.
The Mabon Neighborhood Commission, which has a track record of over 15 years, remains committed to the neighborhood’s growth, focusing on activities for youth, adults, and the general public. This initiative aligns with the vision of “Bon Comun” (Common Good), promoting collaboration and collective wellbeing. In this framework, representatives from various neighborhoods, including Mabon, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2026 to strengthen cooperation and boost community development.
Prime Minister Mike Eman was unable to attend the activity but sent words of support and success for the initiative. The event was a great success, reinforcing the importance of creating gathering spaces for seniors, recognizing their contributions, and strengthening community bonds.
