For the first time, Member of Parliament Eduard Pieters participated in IPKO, which took place in Aruba itself. IPKO is not merely a diplomatic formality; it is a strategic space where the autonomous countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Netherlands itself confront common challenges and define shared priorities. For the PPA faction, even with only one seat in Parliament, the presence was clear: Aruba must lead with dignity, clarity, and vision.
A Kingdom of autonomous countries without uniformity
According to Eduard: “Each country presented its positions, its development, and its concerns. That is precisely what IPKO should be: a forum for sincere exchange. But the fundamental point, according to PPA, is that the Kingdom of the Netherlands is not a uniform structure. There are major interests — public finances, institutional stability, legal certainty — that must remain aligned. But there are also local realities that may differ.”
What applies to Curaçao or Sint Maarten is not always identical to Aruba. Autonomy means that we must be able to adapt decisions according to our own context, without losing overall cooperation.
Cooperation with mutual respect
PPA firmly believes in the ties we have within the Kingdom. Not as a dependency, but as a strategic alliance. Trade, climate, migration, education, and security are issues that transcend borders. A small country like Aruba must use the Kingdom platform intelligently, strengthen collaboration, and at the same time protect its autonomy.
Pieters’ message was clear: cooperation must not be conditional. The Netherlands must respect the position of the autonomous countries, and we must come to the table with serious preparation and internal unity.
National unity is political strength
The fact that IPKO took place in Aruba is a strong symbol. But symbolism alone is not enough.
“PPA advocates for a national front on issues that concern the constitutional and economic interests of the country. There is no room for partisan division when we speak about Aruba’s position within the Kingdom. A country that stands united carries more weight in negotiations than one that is fragmented. The responsibility is shared between government and opposition: place the national interest above political pride,” Eduard indicated.
Autonomy is not an event but a continuous commitment
Status Aparte and autonomy are not ceremonial concepts; they are a continuous obligation. Aruba must demonstrate financial discipline, strategic planning, and coherent leadership to maintain credibility within the Kingdom. Strong cooperation is based on trust and reciprocity.
“IPKO in Aruba has shown that we have the opportunity to lead dialogue within the Kingdom. The PPA faction will continue to work to strengthen cooperation, but always with a clear line: respect for autonomy and protection of the interests of the people of Aruba. Because a strong country is not one that follows another without questioning, but one that negotiates with wisdom, unity, and determination,” Eduard Pieters concluded.
