According to the latest international climatological information, there is a possibility that the natural phenomenon El Niño will continue to develop during the upcoming months of the year 2026-2027 into an extraordinary phenomenon that can bring dangerous and even devastating effects to certain regions. Although El Niño forms in the Pacific Ocean, its effects can be felt in different parts of the world, including the Caribbean.
Therefore, the Department of Public Health (Directie Volksgezondheid – DVG) informs the community that in the months to follow, Aruba may experience higher than normal temperatures, drier periods, and an increased risk of heat-related health problems.
High temperatures can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat fatigue, and other health complications, especially for:
Young children
Elderly persons
People with chronic health conditions
Pregnant women
Persons who work outdoors in the sun
DVG encourages the community during the coming months to:
Drink water frequently throughout the day, even if you might not feel thirsty
Avoid intense physical activity during the hottest hours of the day (11:00 AM to 2:00 PM)
Wear light-colored clothing made of thin fabric
Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply throughout the day
Keep an eye on vulnerable family members and neighbors
Follow official information from DVG and the Meteorological Service of Aruba for updates
DVG, along with other stakeholders, will continue to monitor the potential effects of El Niño on public health and the health of our animals in order to continue providing information, advice, guidance, and care to the different risk groups in our community.
Your Health, Our Priority.
