The Infectious Diseases Section of the Department of Public Health has launched its annual influenza vaccination campaign with the slogan: “Influenza is not just a simple flu,” reminding everyone that influenza is not an ordinary flu, but can lead to hospitalization due to severe complications and even death, especially among vulnerable groups.
Why is this important?
Every year, influenza causes thousands of complications and preventable deaths. Many people are unaware of or underestimate its severity, thinking influenza produces flu-like symptoms similar to other viruses. This is not the case for everyone: an influenza infection can be much more serious in someone who belongs to a risk group compared to someone who does not. This is why the campaign focuses on the importance of timely vaccination to protect yourself if you fall within a risk category.
Who should be vaccinated?
The influenza vaccine is recommended for everyone starting from 6 months of age. It is especially important for the following groups:
* Older adults (60+)
* People with chronic illnesses or health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, weakened immune system, etc.
* Caregivers and frontline workers
* Children under 5 years old
Where is the vaccine available?
The vaccine is available at the Infectious Diseases Section from Monday to Friday, 1:30–4:00 PM via a WALK-IN system, and also in various neighborhoods:
* Thursday, November 13, 8:00–11:00 AM, Frans Figaroa Stadium
* Friday, November 21, 8:00–11:00 AM, Centro Playa Pabou
* Thursday, November 27, 8:00–11:00 AM, Santa Cruz Sports Hall
Citizens aged 60+ must present only their AZV card. Citizens under 60 who have a chronic illness or belong to a risk group must bring a doctor’s prescription and their AZV card.
Individuals who are not in a risk group but still wish to receive the vaccine may purchase it for Awg. 20.00. They may visit the Infectious Diseases office at Avicenna Street #1 between 1:30 – 3:30 PM starting November 24, 2025. Payment is only accepted via card or transfer; cash is not accepted.
Caregivers and frontline workers may also receive their vaccine at our section starting November 24 from 1:30 to 4:00 PM with their AZV card.
