Recently, the faction of the Patriotic Party of Aruba (PPA) received a visit from Michel Nicolaas, an educator who is in the process of writing an extensive book about the life, work, and legacy of Juancho Yrausquin.
To reconstruct this history with seriousness, Nicolaas conducted deep research in Aruba, Curaçao, and the Netherlands. He consulted various archives, organizations, and historical sources, including the National Archives of Aruba, sources in Curaçao, and different institutions in the Netherlands. Through this research, he managed to gather a valuable amount of information regarding Juancho Yrausquin’s personal life, family, political career, and contribution to the development of Aruba.
During his visit, Nicolaas presented the preliminary design of the book. The publication will contain historical portraits and texts that practically did not exist in Aruba, illustrations, the important events of his life, and also the Yrausquin family tree. Thus, the book will not be just a biographical account, but a documentary work that can serve as a source of information for present and future generations.
The first goal of the visit was to officially inform the PPA faction about the research and progress of the book. The second goal was to exchange ideas on how to promote the publication and how to better inform the people of Aruba about Juancho Yrausquin: not only who he was, but principally what he meant, planned, and accomplished for our country.
Juancho Yrausquin was a true visionary. Many of the ideas he defended more than 70 years ago are still visible in the path Aruba follows today. He recognized early on the value of tourism as an engine of development. Today, tourism is the main pillar of our economy. He contributed to the development of the water supply through a desalination plant, an advancement that is now a fundamental part of Aruba’s infrastructure. Furthermore, he initiated pensions for our senior citizens. He always spoke and worked for the protection of our environment, our flora, and our fauna. In addition to this, there is the history of Juancho Yrausquin’s work across the other islands within the Kingdom.
This raises important questions: How far have we come with Juancho Yrausquin’s vision? Are we following the path he indicated, or are there areas where we need to resume his ideas? And how do we ensure that our children know the history of the man who helped lay the foundation for so much of modern Aruba?
Soon, the PPA faction will continue dialogues with Michel Nicolaas to see how to support the printing and publication process of the book, using available channels both in Aruba and within the Dutch Kingdom.
The possibility of using the gathered information to develop educational letters (lesbrieven) for schools was also brought forward. In this way, students can learn not only about Juancho Yrausquin as a historical figure, but also about his role in the economic, social, and infrastructural development of Aruba.
A people that does not know its history cannot fully comprehend its present nor shape its future. Therefore, Michel Nicolaas’s initiative deserves recognition and support. Documenting Juancho Yrausquin’s legacy is more than publishing a book: it is preserving an essential part of Aruba’s memory and passing the vision of a great leader on to the next generations.
