Shailiny Tromp-Lee: Total indignation: government is weakening our democracy and ignoring the people in the rijkswet HOFA process

Shailiny Tromp Lee

With a deep sense of anger and complete indignation, I must once again emphasize that I oppose the dictatorial way in which the Government of Aruba is handling the process surrounding the Kingdom Law HOFA. I condemn the secretive manner in which the government is dealing with this issue, without providing clarity and without taking responsibility.

Once again, it has been confirmed that transparency for this government is a non-existent concept and that respect for our democratic institutions is being trampled.

This is not merely an administrative mistake; this is a direct attack on our autonomy and on the representation of the people.

Without decency and without transparency

An arrogant government that once again did not have the basic decency to inform Parliament that the so-called “internet consultation” had ended and that it had decided to continue with the process. Structurally, they are failing to provide transparency to Parliament and to the entire population.

One must ask:

  • Where is the respect for Parliament?
  • Where is the respect for the unions?
  • Where is the attention to the more than 10,000 signatories who firmly stood against this law?

The government chose to remain silent, hiding vital information and completely ignoring the serious concerns presented by stakeholders. There is no clarity as to whether even a single point of criticism was taken into account, which gives the impression that the consultation was merely a “show” to formally comply with procedures.

A violation of our Constitution and agreements

What is even more alarming is the fact that the proposed Kingdom Law HOFA goes directly against our Constitution. The government has chosen to tamper with the foundations of our rule of law in order to satisfy external interests, without the necessary consensus.

Furthermore, the process being pursued by the government constitutes a clear violation of agreements made during IPKO meetings and of advice from the Council of State.

Even worse is the fact that from the beginning the government has acted without proper authorization. The government agreed to this concept without first properly presenting it to Parliament. They sold our autonomy without the representatives of the people having the opportunity to say “A” or “B.”

Zero information, zero accountability

We are living under governance that has structurally failed in its duty to provide transparency. The lack of information provided to the people of Aruba is creating a deliberate informational “blackout.” It seems that the main goal of this government is to avoid accountability, avoid being questioned, and act like a landowner rather than a servant of the people.

In my opinion, the government’s silence speaks louder than its words. It is a disgrace how our laws, our institutions, and our future are being treated. This is unacceptable.

We cannot and should not allow this process to continue in darkness, violating our Constitution and ignoring the voices of those who truly love this country.

This style of governing must stop today.

The entire people of Aruba must rise and condemn the government’s actions. All of this is happening during the celebration of 40 years of our Status Aparte. Looking at the direction we are heading in… what is there left to celebrate?
