We have taken note of the sad news regarding the unexpected passing of Chandrikapersad Santokhi, former President of Suriname. On behalf of the people of Bonaire and the Bonaire Human Rights Organization, we extend our deepest condolences to the Government and people of Suriname, as well as to his family and loved ones.
We had the honor of meeting this distinguished statesman for the first time in 2018 in Paramaribo during his tenure as opposition leader, and again in 2022 in Paramaribo, while he served as President of Suriname and Chairman of CARICOM during the 43rd Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government. On that occasion, he received us with great warmth and paid serious attention to the case of Bonaire. We also remember our recent meeting during the 2025 CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in Bridgetown, which showcased his ongoing commitment to regional dialogue and solidarity.
President Santokhi will be remembered for his steadfast commitment and dedication, his contribution to strengthening democracy, and his firm devotion to the rights and dignity of the Surinamese people.
In this time of profound loss, we stand in solidarity with the Government and people of Suriname, and with his family and loved ones.
