Man-Pin: Vacation allowance for ministers and parliament members should NOT be increased

Man Pin

MAN-PIN in the Parliament of Curaçao announced today the submission of an amendment to postpone the increase of the vacation allowance for ministers and parliament members until after the current parliamentary term. The Pisas III Cabinet has introduced a law to increase the vacation allowance for civil servants from 6% to 8%. At the same time, this law proposes an increase in the vacation allowance for ministers and parliament members.

MAN-PIN is clear: those who govern the country should not increase their own benefits simultaneously. Any increase for political officeholders must only take effect after the next elections, ensuring that the decision impacts a future parliament and a new government — not the current one. This is, fundamentally, a matter of political morality.

This proposal comes at a time when public confidence in the country’s socio-economic development is under severe pressure, especially in light of ongoing discussions involving our senior citizens. Many elders have been waiting for years for an indexation of their AOV. Meanwhile, poverty is becoming increasingly visible, and many families are struggling with high prices for food, medicine, and housing.

“At a time when many citizens are uncertain about a dignified life, political leaders must set the right example,” the faction stated. Politicians must adhere to the highest standards of responsibility. Therefore, the arrangement for ministers and parliament members should apply only to their successors — not to themselves.
