ST. Maarten : Minister: Richinel Brug Comments on Ombudsman Investigation into SZV

Minister Brug

The Minister of Public Health, Social Development, and Labor, Richinel Brug, has taken note of the systemic investigation launched by the Ombudsman concerning the administrative practices of the Social and Health Insurances (SZV), particularly regarding the medical referral program for foreigners.

The minister indicated that, although it is regrettable that the situation has reached the point of an investigation, he respects the important role of the Ombudsman in ensuring transparency, accountability, and compliance with the law in public institutions. The investigation provides an opportunity to review the processes and determine if improvements are needed.

Brug emphasized that medical referrals for foreigners are essential to the healthcare system of Sint Maarten, as many specialized treatments are not available locally. Each year, SZV facilitates approximately 800 referrals.

The minister highlighted the importance of clear, legal policies, procedures, and administrative practices that are focused on the best interests of patients. Logistical aspects, including travel, accommodation, and patient responsibilities, must also be clearly regulated and applied consistently.

Finally, Brug stated that the investigation could serve as an opportunity to modernize SZV policies, strengthen the system, protect patients, and maintain institutional integrity. The minister confirmed that his ministry and SZV will fully cooperate with the investigation and respond to all questions within the stipulated timeframe.
