Ady Thijsen: “Proud to have been part of MEP for more than 20 years”

The People’s Electoral Movement Party (MEP) celebrated its 55th anniversary in a solemn atmosphere that was also filled with political memory and reflection. At the MEP headquarters, current politicians, former politicians, supporters and party sympathizers gathered to commemorate the anniversary of what many consider the most influential party in Aruba’s political history.

Among those present was Ady Thijsen, former Minister Plenipotentiary and Aruba’s last representative in the Netherlands in that capacity. Although Thijsen is no longer active in politics, he emphasized that he remains available to assist wherever possible, maintaining his commitment to the country’s development.

In his speech, Thijsen expressed his pride in having been part of the MEP for more than 20 years. He congratulated all “MEP members” and the people of Aruba, highlighting that the MEP played a decisive role in the creation of the Status Aparte and in strengthening Aruba’s political identity. According to Thijsen, the Status Aparte not only brought freedom, but also contributed to the country’s economic and institutional stability.

However, while praising the legacy of the MEP, Thijsen also acknowledged the need to prepare the next generation of leaders. He pointed out that much work remains to be done, particularly in the area of education for the younger generation and political training so that future generations can participate more actively and consciously in Aruba’s governance.

During his political career within the MEP, Ady Thijsen held several important positions, including parliamentarian, faction leader, President of the Parliament of Aruba, representative of Aruba to the European Union, and finally Minister Plenipotentiary. He stated that he is satisfied with his contribution to the country’s development, but also aware that future challenges will require renewal and new leadership.

The celebration of MEP’s 55th anniversary was therefore not only a party, but also a moment of historical evaluation and reflection on Aruba’s political future.

One of the sayings that Ady Thijsen is remembered for is: “As long as the MEP exists, Aruba is saved.”
