Minister of VROMI Announces Completion of Housing Plan and Reactivation of the Mortgage Guarantee Fund

Edited Com2024 Official

The Minister of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure (VROMI) announced that Sint Maarten’s Integrated Housing Plan 2025–2035 has been completed. This achievement marks an important step in addressing housing challenges and ensuring adequate housing for all Sint Maarten residents, especially following the government’s acquisition of the Belvedere Remainder area.

The plan, developed during 2024–2025 with support from the National Recovery Program Bureau (NRPB), focuses on “adequate housing for all Sint Maarten residents at every stage of life” and addresses growing demand, high housing costs, land shortages, and the need for social and affordable housing.

According to the plan, at least 1,200 new homes will be constructed over the next 10 years, including social housing, affordable housing, and free-market housing, with 70% of development focused on identifying and improving the use of existing housing stock.

In parallel, the Minister announced the reactivation of the Mortgage Guarantee Fund, a fund created to assist first-time homebuyers. A specialized committee has been appointed to bring the fund back into operation, and a work plan has already been submitted.

The plan will be formally submitted to Parliament in the first quarter of 2026. Minister of VROMI, Patricia Gumbs, emphasized that collaboration between government, the private sector, and the community is essential to achieving a healthy and sustainable housing market.
