Parliamentarian Dangui Oduber: Contrary to what the government promised, purchasing power continues to decline!

Dangui Oduber

Both the Central Bank and the Central Bureau of Statistics confirm this!

With each passing day, it becomes increasingly clear that the AVP-Futuro government has deceived the people and misled everyone. Both parties, AVP and Futuro, ran their campaigns promising to improve purchasing power, lower the cost of living, prevent inflation, and reduce prices across Aruba.
Geoffrey Wever even claimed that “Aruban fridges are empty” and that the Futuro party would ensure they are “filled again.”

Now, after eight months in office, the reality is entirely different. Inflation is rising, and the people have nowhere left to hide from the soaring prices under Geoffrey Wever and the AVP-Futuro Cabinet.
Electricity prices have not gone down, water prices have not gone down, gas prices have increased thanks to Geoffrey Wever, and food prices are higher than ever. Money is not reaching the people, and fridges are emptier than last year.

This is not just an opinion — it has been confirmed by the Central Bank of Aruba (CBA) through its latest Consumer Confidence Survey.
According to the survey for the second quarter of 2025, 88% of Aruban consumers say they can now buy less than they could six months ago.
Furthermore, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) also reported that in September 2025, purchasing power dropped drastically compared to September 2024.

Purchasing power in Aruba is under greater pressure than ever before. The most recent CBS report shows that households in September 2025 needed much more money to get through the month than a year earlier. Families and low-income individuals, in particular, are feeling this pressure the hardest.

An average family needed Afl. 6,622 in September 2025 to cover basic needs, while a single person required Afl. 3,204. In September 2024, those figures were Afl. 6,109 and Afl. 2,944, respectively — representing an increase of over 8%.
This is due to the explosive rise in food prices — exactly what has been warned about for months. And this comes from a government that promised to improve purchasing power and lower the cost of living.

After eight months, the truth is clear: people have less money to spend, inflation is rising, household expenses are increasing, and there is no confidence in the economy.
There is nowhere left to hide from Aruba’s rising prices. The situation has not improved as promised — in fact, it has gotten worse. Prices continue to skyrocket, the cost of living has not improved, and purchasing power keeps falling behind.

Minister Geoffrey Wever said he is working on a “purchasing power model” to improve household finances, but the public has no more patience to wait and see when this model will finally be ready.
Every day, people feel the impact of high prices. Water tariffs haven’t gone down, electricity tariffs haven’t gone down, gasoline prices haven’t gone down, diesel prices haven’t gone down, and supermarket prices remain sky-high.

What will the government do to relieve the burden on the people?
