Parliamentarian Shailiny Tromp-Lee: Vice President Mrs. Muzaninn Wever acting irregularly in meetings

Parlamentario Shailiny Tromp Lee 1

As a member of parliament, I want to express my deep concern about the irregular manner in which the Vice President of Parliament, Mrs. Wever, is handling meetings of the Central Committee.

Two meetings in a row have not been conducted in a serious and responsible manner. These meetings concern the National Ordinance on the Establishment of Ministries (LIM) and the Draft National Ordinance to Amend the 2025 National Budget.

The MEP faction has sent a formal letter to His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Boekhoudt, who must impartially safeguard the integrity of our democracy. We explained step-by-step how the vice president, acting as substitute chair, made decisions that contradict the Rules of Order of Parliament. Not only are meetings called hastily and parliamentarians given almost no space to express opinions and comments, but she also struck the gavel in an authoritarian manner to approve a “blank report,” even though not all members present agreed. This goes against all decency and rules.

This procedure is explicitly prohibited under Article 83 of our Rules of Order. Only when no member objects may one deviate from the rules. It is important for the public to know that MEP objected strongly to this intention. Despite this, Mrs. Wever still struck the gavel and closed the meeting.

When you are blinded by power and believe you can step over the Constitution and the rights of parliamentarians, reality will eventually catch up with you. You may boast loudly and say: “We are the majority, we are in charge.”
But today’s events clearly showed that you cannot behave in a dictatorial manner simply because you hold the majority. The fact that another meeting on the exact same topic had to be called proves this. No matter how much Mrs. Wever tried to justify reconvening and giving some time—though insufficient—it speaks volumes. Truly a disgrace.

I conclude by stating: in parliament it is our duty to follow the rules, not break them!
