The sixth edition of the Playa Film Festival will take place once again at Caribbean Cinemas. Focusing this year on the results of Studio Caribe, a project by the Netherlands Film Fund (Nederlands Filmfonds) that concluded with several short films from both Aruba and Curaçao. During the presentation on Thursday, August 27, the public can enjoy two productions from Aruba: Adrift Wak Leau by Velvet Zoé Ramos and E Peso di Mundo by Juan Francisco Pardo, and from Curaçao, Mane Hombu by Ango Laurens. Alongside these films, there will be a preview of two short films illustrating what will be available during the festival this year. Thursday night will feature a Q&A session with the filmmakers following the presentation.
On Saturday, August 28, Playa will present its most popular category, ‘Kingdom of Shorts’, a collection of short fiction films. This year’s selection consists of Fort Buku by Loëlle Monsanto, Netherlands. Fort Buku was selected by the jury panel to receive the Jury Prize for Best Film of Kingdom of Shorts. Other selections are On the Eve / Bispu by Elizabeth Francisco from Curaçao, Hobi by Aramis Garcia Gonzalez, Netherlands. Also The Day I Met You from Curaçao and A Mother’s Touch from the Netherlands.
The School Short Story competition will be available on Saturday afternoon, August 29, along with a repeat of the Kingdom of Shorts category. During School Short Story, viewers can watch the work of students from Maria College Mavo telling stories about their love for Aruba. Saturday evening will feature a repeat of the Studio Caribe category.
This year the festival introduces the opportunity to watch films online completely free of charge. A wide selection of feature and short fiction and documentary films will be available online during the festival for a global audience to watch and vote for the audience award.
